£5000 - That's a LOT of money...

What will we spend the funds on?

Can the WICU use donated supplies?

Yes it is. Over this year we will welcome a huge number of wildlife casualties. Each one requiring individual treatment.

Picture this

1000 individual creatures, each one needing  JUST ONE of the following basic First Aid treatments:

  • Rehydration

  • Parasite/worming treatment

  • Wound cleaning and dressing

Then add on specific treatments

  • Antibiotics

  • Antifungals

  • Veterinary treatments.

  • Handrearing supplies

BUT... Lots of them will need a whole selection of these treatments and pretty soon the costs to fund them all starts to really mount up.

We will buy the medications, supplies and consumables needed for the WICU to treat all of the incoming wildlife this year. If we raise more than our goal, we will be able to get extra treatments!

An idea of what we hope to purchase:

  • Rehydration treatment

  • Critical care formula

  • Hand rearing formula for all species & consumables

  • Mange & mite treatment

  • Worm, tick and flea treatments

  • Wound cleaners and antiseptics

  • Wound dressings and hydrogels

  • Cotton wool, swabs, buds etc

  • Poisoning treatment

  • Puppy pads for incubator liners

  • A new microscope and slides for parasite identification

  • Antifungal medication

  • Bird canker medication

  • Syringes and droppers

  • Plus veterinary medications as prescribed case by case from our amazing local vets.

There's a whole lot more too... but we will probably run out of website if we list it all!

YES! the Wildlife Intensive Care Unit can absolutely use donated supplies, our supporters drop off (or sometimes even post) things like puppy pads, cotton wool, ready brek (for the baby pigeons) that they have spare or have purchased much more cheaply locally than online.

This does not cover everything we need though and we do have to purchase a lot of things, and some things are only available on prescription.

Case Study:
Samwise the Hedgehog

Meet Samwise, the hedgehog. Samwise was brought into us after waking up from hibernation with the WORST parasite infestation we have ever seen. Loaded with around 150 ticks and an extreme case of mange, Samwise had lost almost every quill on his back, was dehydrated and covered in sores.

Just this one hedgehog required rehydration, anti parasite treatment for the mange and ticks, which will be repeated after 2 weeks, twice daily wound dressing and possibly antibiotic support.

This little one will also require housing for several months, up to one year while the quills grow back.

We need your support to restock our WICU and ensure we have everything in stock and on hand to help the wildlife as it comes through the door.
